Project Day 2008

Project Date: June 7, 2008

Looking to donate your time and talent to improve the quality of life for needy Vermonters? Rebuilding Together Greater Burlington is looking for sixty volunteers to help undertake two projects, both happening on June 7, 2008. The completion of these projects is only possible with the help from volunteers like you.

What can you offer?

Skilled Labor: We need carpenters, electricians, plumbers, roofers, painters, and contractors to address structural issues like leaking roofs, faulty wiring, and plumbing problems. We supply building materials and the support of other skilled volunteers. You provide knowledge, experience, and a day of your time. Please bring your tools!

Unskilled Labor: Everyone welcome. We need volunteers to help with painting, cleaning, and performing numerous other small household jobs. We provide guidance, all material, and set up teams of volunteers at each house. Encourage friends, family, and co-workers to lend a hand too. Please wear your work clothes!

Project Descriptions

Charlotte Project: This project involves an old farmhouse from the 1800s in which an elderly widow, whose husband passed away last year, resides. Many years ago her husband undertook several home improvement projects but never had the time to complete them. As a result there are exposed walls and wires, loose flooring, and a staircase in desperate need of a sturdy railing. The heating system is functioning, but consists only of one direct-vent heating unit. We would like to improve this heating system and the efficiency of the home’s insulation. Overall, most of the work that needs to be done for this project involves safety repairs. 50 volunteers needed.  CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR THE CHARLOTTE PROJECT

St. Lewis Street, Burlington (Old North End) Project: This project involves a household of three: husband, wife, and daughter. The husband currently works full-time on a night shift to support his daughter who is special needs, and his wife. His wife fell ill years ago and is now subsequently wheelchair-bound. The house is in an unacceptable state, especially for some one with a handicap. One issue is that the bathroom is not designed for wheelchair access, which is going to require the remodeling and enlarging of the entire bathroom. Since this is more than a day’s worth of work, the Burlington Housing Authority has partnered with us to undertake that specific job. One of Rebuilding Together’s jobs will be to install an overhead cover for the back deck, which is where the wife’s wheelchair lift is located. At the moment, both the lift and deck are exposed to the elements, which has created undue wear and tear on the lift as well as difficulty moving across the deck in poor weather conditions. Since the house is older and drafty, the other job will be to repair the windows in the house to make them more efficient by sealing them properly. 10 volunteers needed.
