WINOOSKI, VT – Barbara Hatin of Winooski will have a safer, warmer home thanks to the work of 30 volunteers from Rebuilding Together*Greater Burlington (RT*GB) who arrived at her home Saturday to make some needed repairs and improvements. Joining RT*GB volunteers on this project were volunteers from the 7850 District Rotary Conference being hosted by the Burlington Sunrise Rotary.

Barbara, a widowed senior citizen, needed a new roof as well as a host of other repairs made to her home. A badly rotted double window was replaced with a new energy-efficient one. A new energy-efficient front door and bathroom window were installed as well. A garage door opener was installed to make access to the garage possible from the exterior. In back, gutters were installed and a storage shed was painted. A set of steps was even constructed to make it easier for Mrs. Hatin to access the shed. While volunteers from the Home Builders and Remodelers Association supervised the skilled renovation work, other volunteers helped with scraping and painting and clearing unwanted articles from the basement and yard.

This late spring Project Day saw another project undertaken in Burlington: Rebuilding Together*Greater Burlington and volunteers from the 7850 District Rotary Conference and the Home Builders Association built a handicap ramp, repaired windows and doors and installed smoke detectors for a family on North Avenue. Other safety improvements were made to the home as well.

“We are grateful to be working with the Sunrise Rotary and other Rotarians from the District on this important project,” said Dixie O’Connor, Immediate Past President of Rebuilding Together*Greater Burlington. “It’s our goal to not only improve the homes of seniors, the disabled, and low-income families in the area, but also to improve the community, so that everyone may live in safety, warmth and independence.”

The renovation of Barbara Hatin’s home was made possible by a generous grant from Wells Fargo Housing Foundation. The grant paid for the materials needed in the renovations to Mrs. Hatin’s home but it is the donated labor which allows RT*GB to leverage grants and donations to accomplish miracles on Project Days.
